On Tuesday, we broke ground on our newest elementary school. Trustees, staff and representatives from WalterFedy were all on-site to celebrate this momentous occasion. A special thank you to the Ontario Ministry of Education for their continued support and commitment to ensuring our schools continue to be innovative places to learn.

“I am confident that Janet Metcalfe Public School will provide its students with a well-rounded education to inspire and challenge them,” said Mitzie Hunter, former Minister of Education. “I am certain that Janet Metcalfe Public School will help provide its students with the support they need, not only to achieve, but to thrive.”

Janet Metcalfe Public School, located in Southwest Kitchener at the corner of Seabrook Drive and Amand Drive, is scheduled to open in September 2018 for students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. The school will also be home to a child care centre. The elementary school has been named after Canada’s first ever kindergarten teacher, Janet Metcalfe, who taught in Waterloo region for more than thirty years.

Coincidentally, the first principal at Janet Metcalfe Public School is also a Janet. Janet Hale will leave her role as principal at Lincoln Heights Public School in March 2018 to begin planning for the new school opening. She is looking forward to welcoming the new families and states, “I am excited to have an opportunity to serve this new community and to provide a foundation for students to reach their potential as global citizens.”
